Once you have move away
from the costal regions of Spain (costas), you will find yourself
in a different world. The cities of Spain are full of narrow
twisting old streets that suddenly open out to views of old
and modern architecture which mixes together almost seamlessly,
you will find spit-and-sawdust bars serving wine from the
barrel usually accompanied with a tappas list to quench your
hunger pains, trendy cafes, or great restaurants serving local
and International cuisine. The nights are busy and you can
choose to rub shoulders at modern discos that come alive in
the evenings and generally stay open till the early hours
of the morning if not later!
Travel to Spain is easy using the budget airlines that now
operate, or you can choose to get there by car either driving
through Franc or perhaps using the ferry services that run
between England and Northern Spain.
Accommodation is plentiful, the climate is generally one of
the best in Europe for sun seekers with temperatures soaring
into the high 30’s/low 40’s in August, the people
are relaxed, the beaches are long and sandy, the food and
drink is in abundance and easy to come by and also full of
regional variety. More than 50 million foreigners visit Spain
every year, but move inland a little and you can also travel
for days and hear nothing but Spanish.
Geographically, Spain's diversity is immense. There are endless
area of wild, crinkled and seamlessly unexplored areas of
the sierra to explore, as well as some spectacularly rugged
stretches of coastline between the more used tourist beaches
on the Costas. In addition to beaches you have mountains that
are ideal for skiing in the winter or trekking in the summer.
For the more Culturally interested travelers, the country
has an endless supply of superb old buildings, from Roman
aqueducts and Islamic palaces to Gothic cathedrals to explore
and enjoy. Almost every second village has a medieval castle
so there is plenty to explore. Spain has also been the home
of some of the world's greatest artists, El Greco, Velázquez,
Goya, Picasso and Dalí to name a few and there are
endless museums and galleries all around Spain reflecting
these and other artists work as well as the history of Spain.
The country also accommodates music lovers with music to suit
every taste, from the drama of flamenco which can be found
in hundreds if not thousands of bars across the country to
the melancholy lyricism of the Celtic music and gaitas (bagpipes)
of the northwest part of Spain.
Overall, spring, summer, autumn and winter are ideal times
for a Spanish trip so you can see it is an ideal destination
for the whole year, the weather varies enormously from region
to region and also from the time of year you travel. Make
sure you aware of the general climate when booking your holiday
to Spain and also the accommodation you book, make sure it
meets your requirements, as an example a villa with a pool
in August seems a much better idea than an apartment without
a pool, the opposite could be said for April perhaps when
the pool might not be used so much! The high central plains
of Spain suffer from fierce weather extremes, stiflingly hot
in summer, bitterly cold and swept by freezing winds in winter.
Although these area are not generally the destination for
many people on a holiday in Spain this is where you will find
the real Spain as it has been for centuries with little change.
The areas of Spain which are situated on the Atlantic coast
are a firm favorite with Wind Surfers and Surfers alike due
to the generally good waves which keep the sea churning around
for most of the year so again bear in mind that this is normally
a windy area of Spain although saying that it can also be
perfect when the wind drops, the beaches here are less crowded
than the Southern beaches of Spain.
The Mediterranean coast on the other hand benefits from warm
water virtually all year round and is a firm favorite with
families. In high summer one of the main factors to consider
is tourism itself. Spain plays host to some thirty million
tourists every year almost one for every resident and all
of the main beach and mountain resorts are packed in July
and August, as are the major sights such as Seville, Madrid
and Barcelona. August is Spain's holiday month so a lot of
Spanish holiday makers also make their way to the costal areas
of Spain, sees the coast as it’s most crowded and the
cities, by contrast, pretty sleepy.
